KOZA System in Japanese University

Koza system is made in Japan university. This system is very popular and become a heritage system.

KOZA (講座 ― こうざ) is a Japanese word literally meaning “lecture chair”. In a complete set consisted of:

  • a full professor (KYOJU, 教授 ー きょうじゅ),
  • an assistant professor (JOKYOJU, 助教授 ー じょきょうじゅ), and
  • two research associates (JOSHU, 助手 ー じょしゅ).

A KOZA こうざ constituted the minimal set of research groups under the strong leadership of the full professors. The number of KOZAs in the department or faculty is very important.
